Who would have thought that a
full-fledged Governmental body would be formed to promote what appears to be a tattered
piece of coarse fibre?
Think again. That fibre used to pack things and rub your feet is today the fabric that
adorns walls, covers floors in rich colour and design. What's more, its eco-friendly
texture has brought in diverse functions.
JMDC, the Jute Manufactures Development
Council is the national agency for promotion of Indian
Jute. Created by an Act of Indian Parliament in 1983, it is chaired by the Secretary,
Government of India, Ministry of Textiles.
